I get bored easily,” says Ryan D’Rozario. The DJ-turned-graphic designer-turned hair stylist doesn’t need to tell us twice. But with 12 years in the business of tresses, the Mumbai-based ‘mane master’ has undoubtedly found a profession that keeps him ever evolving. “Hair is the one thing that just never stops changing,” Ryan states candidly. And of course, once you get great at hair, you get to cut for great people. Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan, Sachin Tendulkar and our very own A R Rahman have one thing in common – Ryan has cut for all of them.

In the city for a two-day seminar on the latest trends in hair styling, he puts down his scissors for a quick chat with City Express. “My wife and I keep coming down to Chennai for A R Rahman’s hair,” he says. And this isn’t only for events, shoots and red carpet ceremonies, lets on the stylist who was responsible for Rahman’s ultra straight locks at the Grammys. “One of us will fly down any time that he wants a haircut,” Ryan explains. So what does ARR like? The stylist doesn’t need too long too think about his answer. “Well he’s always open to change, but I’d say Rahman is definitely more comfortable with his hair long as compared to short.” As the music director is usually recording at night, Ryan takes a flight in to make it for lunch and a hair cut, before he heads back to his popular ‘Salon Muah’ in Mumbai.

“I do hair and my wife does make-up, so why thought why not put them together in a name?” Ryan laughs. And that’s how they arrived at Muah (Make-Up And Hair). Asked about what’s in on the trend watch this summer and Ryan tells us that short fringes and hard geometric lines are making waves around the globe. “Although a lot of ladies here (in India) don’t want to try anything too drastic, so we try and incorporate the same styles in a subtle fashion,” he explains.

One has to wonder though, how did he finally ‘lock down’ on hair after his other career changes? “I did a lot of hair cuts for my friends, Ryan remembers. And one of them who was incidentally a stylist gave him the push he needed to join a school to get some training, He goes on with a laugh, “Back in the day, before I had joined a school, I would use coloured markers to mark sections on my friends’ scalps! Thankfully none of them complained!”
