A senior Travel Ticket Examiner (TTE) has been arrested here for trying to molest a 26-year-old woman passenger in the two-tier AC coach of the Shalimar Express. The woman, who was reportedly woken up by the drunk TTE onboard the moving train, was forced to take refuge in the toilet to escape his advances.
“TTE Ramarao, who belongs to Vijayawada, was arrested after the train reached Central at 6.40 pm on Wednesday and he was remanded in Puzhal prison,” Inspector of the Government Railway Police at Chennai Central Sekar told Express, a day after his arrest.
“Ramarao was drunk at the time of committing the offence,” he added.
Sunitha (name changed), boarded the train at Gudur in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday with an unreserved ticket, police said. She was allotted a berth in the AC coach by the TTE. Midway through the journey, Ramarao allegedly woke her up and tried to molest her. “I will show you heaven,” the TTE reportedly told the passenger, while trying to misbehave with her, police said.
She immediately made a dash for the toilet for cover, raising an alarm in the train’s bogey. While in the loo, she informed her relatives in Chennai. The information was then relayed to police.
“As the train arrived at Central, we took the accused in custody. He was arrested under Section 354, Section 4 of Women Harassment Act and for being under the influence of alcohol on duty,” Sekar said.
