A 42-year-old man was hacked to death by an unidentified gang at a house in Purasawalkam here on Wednesday.
The victim Vijaya Kumar, a small time real estate businessman, was in his house at Arasappan Mudhali Street around 12 noon when three men armed with knives and sickles suddenly entered the house and stabbed him.
The daring daylight murder in the densely populated residential area took place even as Kumar’s sister Sasikala was present in the house. “We all heard the loud screams from the house. Before we could realise what is happening, the men escaped from the house,” said a neighbour in the street.
Police said Kumar was a bachelor and was living with his two sisters Sasikala and Rajini Devi in the family-owned house. Besides the rent generated from the other portions of the house, Kumar was involved in real estate business for livelihood.
“The assailants seems to be hired henchmen. They have assaulted him on the neck leaving him dead on the spot. The investigation is still at the initial stage. But, the motive seems to be personal. He is also having a civil dispute over a property with few other individuals,” said a police officer privy to the investigation.
Based on the complaint of Sasikala, the Vepery police have registered a case of murder and are further investigating.
Groom At Large
A day before her wedding with a software engineer, a 22-year-old woman lodged a cheating complaint against the groom and his family, stating that they were missing.
The woman, Suriya Priya, a BE graduate, said that her family arranged for the wedding with one Sundaresan after coming across his profile in a matrimonial website. The complainant also alleged that the groom’s family had obtained a huge sum as dowry from them, and had gone missing since Tuesday. The wedding was scheduled for Thursday. “We are not able to contact them over phone as their mobiles are switched off,” said Priya. Priya’s mother, Uthami’s written complaint has been forwarded to the concerned police limits.
