Museum on wheels to roll out in 2 months

The mobile exhibition ‘MuseÓbus’ of the Government Museum in Egmore, will be ready in about two months. Built at a cost of Rs 30 lakh, the bus will enclose 30 artifacts that will be visible from the outside through glass panels.

A senior museum official said that the bus would also comprise an LCD panel that will display the items inside.

“The bus will primarily serve as an educational tool to those who are unable to visit museums or cannot look for information on the Internet. We plan to introduce thematic exhibitions on various eras,” he said.

He added that children studying in government schools were also among the target audience. The mobile museum would soon travel to other districts of the State.

A curator of the Egmore Museum said that efforts were being taken to address the the plaguing problems in the museum such as dirty restrooms and lack of clean drinking water. “What can we do? At least 1,000-1,500 persons visit the museum every day. We are not an autonomous body and are dependent on the government and Public Works Department. Hence, any process needs to follow a hierarchy, which is time-consuming,” he said.

Among other proposals that the museum is planning to submit to higher authorities is introduction of server-based ticketing system, he revealed. This would, however, be based on a feasibility study.
