Education Minister P Palaniappan on Thursday assured the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMS) of a 1.16-acre land for the construction of a multi-storeyed hostel building. Delivering the address to mark the golden jubilee celebrations here, the Minister said that he would bring it to the notice of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for further action.

Palaniappan said the institute is willing to pay for the hostel land. Interestingly, a decision was taken on 2003 to transfer the land to IMS at a cost of Rs 3 crore. However, no decision was taken.

Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences Prof R Balasubramanian and Registrar of the institute S Vishnu Prasad said  they had requested the State Government to review the decision.

Prasad said that the land is currently in a poor shape and there is an urgent need to maintain it. Currently, the hostel has only 35 rooms and can’t accommodate all the 165 students.

The institute also denied  reports that they are on the verge of getting the land. “It is still in the initial stage and we have put forth our request to the government,” Prasad said.

Meanwhile, the Minister also laid the foundation stone for the regional library expansion project for National Board for Higher Math (NBHM) in the institute.
