It is time for Chennaites to brace themselves as the mercury readies for a further climb. According to the weather department the city’s temperature will go up by another four to five degrees by the second half of May as the peak summer season descends on the city.

“The peak of the summer season will be between the second half of May and the first half of June. As the sun moves towards the south the temperature will continue to rise. In the next 15 days or so, till the second half of May, we will see an increase by four to five degrees,” said deputy director of the Regional Meteorological Department S B Thambi.

He said that the month of April had remained largely within the normal temperature for the period. “The temperature in April has been normal except for the first week or so when it rose a little. The Meenambakkam temperature has been about two degrees above that of Nungambakkam, this too is normal for the time of the year,” he said.

On Tuesday the Nungambakkam weather station recorded a temperature of 35.6 degrees celsius and Meenambakkam 37.2 degrees celsius.

The minimum temperature has been 28.1 degrees at Nungambakkam, which is above normal by about one degree.

Meenambakkam noted a minimum temperature of 0.2 degrees.

Maximum and minimum temperature is forecast to be around 36 and 28 degrees in the next couple of days in and around Chennai city. The sky will be partly cloudy.
