CHENNAI: It was a farewell day on Thursday for the Villipuram baby, which was admitted to the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital (KMCH) about three months back with mysterious fire injuries on its body. On the day of discharge the baby was given a name and some gifts by the doctors. However, the Child Protection Group and Police will continue to monitor the child at home.

The second boy baby of Villupuram couple Karna and Rajeshwari was admitted to the KMCH on January 15 after it mysteriously suffered burn injuries in its legs at home after initial treatment at the Villupuram Medical College Hospital.

Dr Narayana Babu, Dean of the hospital told reporters on Thursday that the baby was under the watchful eyes of Child Protection Group and police. “We did about 40 types of medical tests including chromosome test, skin testing for combustible chemicals and different types of blood tests. But all results were negative. We kept the baby in the hospital for about 84 days just to see if there are any recurring of fire episodes. Even the baby’s parents were subjected to chromosome test. This was done to check if there are any genetic related issue as the couple’s first son also had the same issue,” he added.

The baby which was born on January 9 weighed 2.1 kg at the time of admission. “The baby was hale and hearty, weighing about 5.4 kg when it was discharged”. Doctors at the paediatric department named the baby as Jayaramachandran at the time of discharge and presented him some gifts. The parents were instructed to bring the child for review once in two months,” Dr Narayana Babu added.

The State government had constituted a four- member special committee led by the Dean of the hospital to investigate the case of the baby.
