CHENNAI: Asserting that being born a girl was not her choice, and she cannot be insulted as being a source of ‘tension’, a city-based teacher moved a Public Interest Litigation before the Madras High Court against a recent advertisement starring actor Prakash Raj.

In the advertisement for a jewellery chain,  being shown on TV and other media recently, the actor Prakash Raj says daughters of marriageable age were a tension for their fathers. This was objected to by the teacher, S Safiath, who asserted that the commercial lowered the dignity of women.

The first Bench, of Chief Justice SK Kaul and Justice T S Sivagnanam, refused to entertain the PIL, noting that only actor Prakash Raj was made a respondent and that the petitioner had failed to put the promoters of the product on notice before approaching the court for banning the commercials.

“The focus seems to be on the first respondent only because he happens to be a cine actor,” the judges said.
