CHENNAI: The vocal recital by Sunil Gargyan for Nada Inbam at Raga Sudha Hall had a convincing classical fare. The performance revealed his grasp on nuances of carnatic music, which was imparted by maestros P S Narayana Swamy, Nagai Bashyam and Srirangachary. He started with an assuring imagination of the kriti Intha Paraka composed by Aanaiyah and rendered in Raga Mayamalava Gowla.
It was preceded by a short Saranga Raga Varnam, which was presented with a deft version of Sukhi Evaro, rendered in Kanada Raga. And with this kriti of Thyagaraja delivered with a short alapana, all we realised was his uncanny ability to present the fascinating features through an insightful recital.We confirmed this, when he descended on Chakkani Raja, a Karaharapriya Alapana of Thyagaraja.
The lyrical expressions revealed the authentic ring in terms of padantharam. Earlier in a few strides, he covered the length and breadth of Venkataramana in Raga Lathangi (63rd melakarta) quite well, exhibiting the creativity embedded in the kriti. Vanamengae, a Ragamalika Arutpa rendition tuned by his Guru Narayanaswamy in Hamsanandhi, Athana, Varali and Nilambari ragas, was appreciable. The concert with measured ragas and songs, indicated that he was able to outline his manodharma, but lacked mellifluousness with inclusive melody. If he incorporates this aspect, he would definitely ascend the ladder of success quickly.
