CHENNAI: After dedicated service and producing many students who have gone on to become achievers, the latest being IAS Officer Beno Zephine, The Little Flower Convent for The Blind celebrated its 87th annual day with great fanfare.
Proving that academic excellence was theirs as well, the visually challenged student toppers received awards at the ceremony.
In addition, students with academic excellence, from next year, would be receiving special prizes from the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped(NIVH). “Braille printing will be done by the government from the next academic year so that all Tamil Nadu schools will get free textbooks. In addition, special walking canes — ‘smart canes’ that come with laser and special recorders will be given to academically sound students’,” said Krupanandam Yasarapudi, Regional Director of NIVH, who was a special guest at the event.
The inaugural event was followed by cultural programmes. Showing that vision need not be a factor for synchronisation and rhythm, the visually challenged girls of the senior sections put up a Bharatanatyam performance to a film song, and their perfect coordination drew many claps from the audience. Musically accomplished as well, the school choir sang the popular ‘Waving Flag’ with much enthusiasm, with an in-house keyboardist and drummer. The students also staged a play on socially relevant issues like alcohol abuse.
