CHENNAI: The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu will soon turn into a smart terminal for commuters as Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is planning to install a WiFi network within the complex.

A CMDA official said that the project was given the green light at the authority meeting held last month.

It is learnt that a total of two lakh people visit the bus terminus daily, and efforts are on to make it a smart terminal by well equipping it with Internet facilities as well as an Intelligent Transport Management System.

Sources said that a service provider had come forward to offer the services.

When City Express contacted the agency which had offered to set up an elaborate network of WiFi facilities on the CMBT premises, the official said that the proposal was in the initial stage, and refused to divulge any information.

It is learnt that the agency had proposed to provide free Internet services for 30 minutes at 1 mbps speed for every user entering the CMBT premises. Once the 30 minutes of usage is over, the user will be charged. All infrastructure arrangements like services, broadband connections and help desks would be provided by the agency, free of cost.

There will be access points at 14 locations to enable uninterrupted 24x7 Internet access at any point within the CMBT complex.

CMDA sources said that the service provider would be allocated 50 square feet of space near Platform 6 of CMBT for a server room for system and infrastructure.

It is learnt that during the authority meeting, the CMDA put forth conditions pertaining to the lease period for the space.

A source said that it had been fixed as 11 months and renewals may be allowed as per the prevailing increment rate.

During the meeting, it was also discussed that the company should provide Internet facility at 1mbps speed with proper built-in security and feedback mechanism free of cost for individual users.
