CHENNAI: Former DMK deputy mayor of Tirunelveli corporation, K Muthuramalingam, was arrested here on Friday on the charge of kidnapping a businessman over a land deal dispute. This followed an alert to the police contorl room by someone on Thursday night about a gang forcibly taking a man inside a car at Gopalapuram.

A police team was pressed into action to trace the car. However, a few hours later the kidnapped man, identified as Sanraj(42), returned to his home at Gopalapuram. “When enquired, he said he was kidnapped by Muthuramalingam's men over a dispute. He was severely beaten in the car and was taken to a house at T Nagar. However, he managed to escape from there,” said a police officer.

Police said the dispute pertained to a land deal for which Sanraj had obtained an advance from Muthuramalingam.

Based on a complaint, Royapettah police registered a case and arrested Muthuramalingam and his accomplice Prakash. “We are looking out for two more persons involved in the kidnapping,” said the officer.
