CHENNAI: In what will come as a major relief from traffic congestion to the residents of North Chennai, one arm of Vyasarpadi flyover from Sathya Moorthy Nagar Main Road to Basin Bridge is all set to open in a week’s time.
The Tamil Nadu Highways has wound up a bulk of the work, except for patchworks and electrical work. The four-lane flyover, which starts at Basin Bridge Road, splits into two-lanes on each side, one reaching Erukancheri High Road and the other culminating at Sathya Moorthy Nagar Main Road.
The approach road work on Basin Bridge side is completed. “The arm is scheduled to open in a week. Work on the other arm towards Erukancheri High Road is also going on in full swing. We are planning to complete it in another three months,” said an official concerned with the project.
The project, which began in 2010 after decades of agitations by the residents for a flyover in the area to ease traffic congestion, was supposed to be completed in 2013. But complications in land acquisition and shifting of sewer lines had led to an inordinate delay.
“On the side that reaches Erukancheri High Road, a small portion of land acquisition work is pending. It will be over soon after which we will have no obstacles in completing the construction work,” said the official.
Simultaneously, a new problem has cropped up for the department. Miscreants were reported of dumping construction debris in the night time on the side of the approach road towards Basin Bridge.
“The record shows that is the land under the control of Railways and Public Works Department (PWD). Some miscreants during night time dump the debris and run. We have apprised the Chennai Corporation, Railways and PWD officials on the matter. But none have come up with a solution in this regard so far,” the official said.
