CHENNAI: The Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, a Muslim outfit, is heading for a split over the party leader M K Jawahirullah’s decision to quit the People’s Welfare Front and form an alliance with the AIADMK.
The MMK general secretary Thamin Ansari announced that the party’s general council meeting would be convened to discuss the alliance strategy for the Assembly elections. Ansari is against any alliance with the AIADMK and wants to join the People’s Welfare Front comprising MDMK, VCK and Left parties.
He has participated in public meetings of the PWF and criticised the AIADMK, DMK and BJP.
Jawahirullah opposed the idea of converting the People’s Welfare Front into an electoral alliance and has said an alliance other than the AIADMK and DMK would not be able to win elections.
Jawahirullah said the MMK would convene its general council and decide on taking action against Thamim Ansari.
He claimed 95 per cent of the party was with him and alleged attempts to split the party.
Jawahirullah, who won from Ramathapuram with AIADMK support, said the MMK was treated well by the AIADMK. Another MLA Aslam Basha won from Ambur constituency.
