CHENNAI: Kanithamizh Sangam honoured the editor of Tamil daily, Dinamalar R Krishnamurthy, for creating the widely used Krishnamurthy Keyboard and, Shreelipi fonts using the Tamil script despite resistance from others. He was awarded with the Computer Tamil Award by the Sangam at a function held at Tamil Virtual Academy, recently.
“It is a great honour for me to be recognised for the work I had done 30 years ago. The lead metal letters which were used for hand composing, posed a lot of problems and was time consuming. I wanted to give it a makeover from lino type system in printing to digital printing. So I did a detailed study about Tamil script formation. This research helped me create new fonts for Tamil characters in the computer world,” said the editor.
‘’I went to Modular System, Pune and created keyboard and fonts for Tamil. Now, Shreelipi has been used all over the world by Tamil people and I came to know that Shreelipi fonts have been sold to Microsoft. I did not have the thought of getting a patent for the fonts I have found. I consider it as a service to God,’’ he added.
M Anandakrishnan, chairman of IIT Kanpur, too lauded the efforts of the editor.
“His contribution to Tamil language and the entire State is great,” he said.
