CHENNAI: The hotly contested Nadigar Sangam election may be over with the Pandavar Ani’s victory, but on Monday, an emotional Sarathkumar added a final twist to the saga, announcing that he had himself cancelled the land lease deal with SPI Cinemas on September 29.

The lease deal was the bone of contention in the fiercely fought Nadigar Sangam elections. The Vishal camp, which won the elections, had made the lease deal the main plank of its campaign, alleging that it would amount to giving away the Sangam’s land at a throwaway price.

“The deal with SPI Cinemas was cancelled on September 29,” said Sarathkumar, in a choked voice, during a press meet on Monday.

Stating that he was deeply hurt by baseless allegations levelled against him during the course of the campaigning for the Nadigar Sangam elections, he said, “I wanted to clear these baseless accusations levelled against me because I have given 33 years of my life to service. These allegations have been bothering me. However, I reiterate that this agreement is totally beneficial to the South Indian Artistes Association. It is one of the best agreements that could be drawn up.”
