Daan Utsav to Spread Joy of Giving to Over 100 Cities

CHENNAI: A number of organisations have come forward to participate in Daan Utsav, Joy of Giving, an event that is expected to be held between 2  and 8 October. Into it’s seventh edition, Daan Utsav hopes to reach out to over 2 million people from 100-plus cities by conducting events and fund raisers.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, detailing the plans of the celebrations next month, Dr Sailakshmi of Ekam foundation said, “This year, with the support of volunteers a large-scale hospital clean up drive is planned. Antenatal wards, corporation hospitals, post natal and paediatric wards, toilets and the surrounding environment of many hospitals will be cleaned. Volunteers from NSS and other student service wings would lend their support by cleaning close to 17 medical colleges and 27 district headquarters hospitals.”

Narendra Malhotra, CEO of Oriental Cuisines, said, “All those working in the corporate sector yearn to help various causes as part of Daan Utsav. Like last year, French Loaf and La Chocolatier will be making the longest photo cake. They will pay a tribute to award winning Tamil movies. The event will be held at Forum Mall, Vadapalani on Sunday at 4 pm. The proceeds of the cake sale would be handed over to different NGOs.” 

Sheetal, Academic Coordinator of Eurokids Chennai, explaining Eurokids’ plan for this year’s Daan Utsav said, “Close to 4,000 students will be drawing and painting cards to thank people in their neighbourhood, like policemen and auto drivers, for their daily contributions. Moreover, a Daan Utsav collection booth will be setup outside schools. Items like stationary and clothing can be dropped off in these collection booths.  On October 8, these items will be donated to local organisation that are in need of resources.”

Sunny, a member of the Weekend Agriculturist group called out to the public to help farmers during weekends. He said, “Those who are have time during weekends can join the weekend agriculturist group. It is a city-based group that lends its hand to farmers in neighbouring areas like Tambaram, Pakkam and Thindivanam. Students, software engineers and working professionals can contribute their time and effort towards helping farmers till their land. The experience will help volunteers learn about the nuances off farming.” 

Rama Subramian from Talent Quest of India said,  “This year we have over 150 student volunteers in 26 districts who will spread awareness and conduct community campaigns in their respective hometowns.”
