Harvest Fest Ushers in Food, Fun and Excitement

CHENNAI: The Harvest Festival held at St. George’s Cathedral celebrated 200 glorious years of its being on Sunday. Over the years the annual fest has evolved into a tradition for Chennai dwellers, who look forward to it every year.

St. George’s Cathedral is the Cathedral Church of the Church of South India, Diocese of Madras. Located at the heart of the city, its grand building with a steeple touching the skies, has a unique place in the history of churches in Chennai and thus stands tall as a major landmark in church union and ecumenism.

With about 70 stalls including kiosks offering breakfast and traditional eats, those selling jewellery and others having engrossing games for kids, put up for the occasion, the church on Sunday morning was a lot more crowded than usual and saw a gathering of  about 400 people .

To add to the festivities, church members conducted an auction which was the highlight of the event. Jewellery of the church and a 180-year-old Bible, a priced possession of the institution were auctioned to the public starting at a selling price of ` 1 lakh. All proceeds from the festival would go towards constructing a second edition of St. George’s Cathedral on Cathedral Road and the education of destitute kids.
