CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced housing projects worth Rs 1,747.46 crore for Low Income Group and Middle Income Group people in Chennai and some other parts of the State. These projects would be implemented by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board and the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.

Making a suo motu statement under Rule 110, the Chief Minister said with a view to provide dwelling units for families of Low Income Group, 2,300 residential quarters would be built at Ambattur at a cost of Rs 380 crore by TNHB with the cost of each quarters fixed below Rs 20 lakh.

Under the scheme to provide own houses for government employees of C and D divisions, 500 multi-storey residential quarters would be built at Padikuppam and Villivakkam areas. Each quarters would have two bedrooms, kitchen, toilets and a dining hall in an area of 700 sqft. The estimated cost of the project would be Rs 225 crore and construction  would commence within this financial year.

She also announced that as many as 2,800 residential units would be constructed for LIG and MIG families by the TNHB in the districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Cuddalore, Krishnagiri, Salem, Madurai and Tiruchy at an estimated cost of Rs 674.96 crore.

As part of the efforts to realise the objective — hutment-free cities — envisioned in Vision 2023 document, 12,500 quarters would be constructed at a cost of Rs 457.50 crore.  These would be given to the families in economically weaker sections of the society and the scheme would be implemented by the TNSCB with the Central government grant for its ‘Housing For All’ Scheme.

The Chief Minister further said of the 1.55 lakh quarters built by the TNSCB in the past, many were in need of repair and maintenance works. For this, purpose, the State government would allocate Rs 10 crore.

Stating that the works on establishing a satellite town near Thoppur-Uchapatti area near National Highways Seven (NH-7) were progressing well, the Chief Minister said the TNHB would hand over 10 per cent of the areas to be improved under this scheme to the TNSCB to develop 4,500 housing units for economically weaker sections.

In turn, the TNSCB would allocate these units to the families who have been living in objectionable poromboke lands in Madurai city. The beneficiaries could build their own houses in this land and the TNSCB would extend assistance in this regard. This would make Madurai a city free of hutments.

Jayalalithaa further said power consumption by individuals had been going up in urban areas due to rapid growth and change in lifestyle. Considering this fact, the government would take steps to make solar power facility mandatory in apartments and multi-storey buildings. Necessary amendments would be made in the rules.
