CHENNAI: Two Class VII boys who went to play near a temple pond at Korattur on Sunday morning were found drowned in it.

The deceased were identified as K Ajay (13) and his friend S Thirumurugan (13), residents of Ellai Amman Nagar in Korratur.

On Sunday, at 2.30 pm, visitors to the temple had gone to the Seeyathamman temple pond to wash their feet, when they spotted two bodies floating. They immediately alerted the temple priests who informed the police. The bodies were fished out of the ten-foot deep tank and were sent to Kilpauk Medical Hospital for autopsy.

Initial investigations by the police who visited the spot said Ajay and Thirumurugan might have accidentally fallen into the tank.

On Sunday, the duo left home to go walking at around 8 am and did not return at the usual time.

“Usually, I accompany my son walking every morning. Today, since his friend came, I stayed back. They usually go to the nearby lake which also has a walker’s park and it is only half-a-kilometre away from home. But today, they went close to the temple,” said Kasinadan, an advocate and father of Ajay.

“The boys probably went to the temple pond to wash their face and since they were wearing shoes, they might have accidentally slipped and fallen in to the pond and drowned,” said the investigating officer.

Ajay and Thirumurugan were studying in the seventh standard in different private schools in the same locality. Suresh, father of Thirumurugan is a vegetable vendor in the same locality.
