CHENNAI: Mayan A, a 54-year-old man from Tiruchy, developed a vision problem due to blocks in brain blood vessels and almost lost the hope of recovery. But doctors at the multi-super specialty hospital at Omandurart Omandurar government estate estate removed the blocks through interventional procedure without opening the skull. Now, thanks to them,  Mayan is back to normal life.

Mayan, a daily wage worker, is one of 1,400 patients who were  cured of blocks in blood vessels in the brain through neuro interventional procedures free of cost, which or else would have costed `10 lakh or so at private hospitals.

“I used to get splitting headache and the pain was getting unbearable day by day. I also developed double vision and bulging of eye. I went to many hospitals, but I could not afford the cost,” said Mayan.

Just as blocks in heart blood vessels are dilated through a catheter, blocks in brain blood vessels are dilated. The catheter is passed through a femur region to the brain vessels and will be dilated. said Dr A L Periyakaruppan, an associate consultant, radiologist at the hospital.
