CHENNAI: Are you one of those who gets upset in clubs if the DJ does not play the songs you like?  Here is what DJ Ashes aka Anjali Doshi has to say on this. “It is wrong. You should expect new tracks and mixes and adapt to new genres. Don’t just stick to the same tracks and don’t ask for repeats. I don’t play a track twice in a night,” states the DJ as we chatted with her after her night at Blend, Taj Club House.

She started out with commercial and trap music in 2012 but now she experiments with deep house and techno. What about EDM? “Electronic dance music is a culture and has huge promotions through different music fests. But EDM lovers eventually change their style into something else. It’s a fad that dedicated music lovers go through in order to grow. They eventually find their way to deep house, techno, future, tropical or vocal house,” says Ashes who as a child enjoyed commercial music, J Lo and Linkin Park. Now her favourite is deep house.

The artist manager of Slick, the underground music commuters, ventured into the music field after a career in hotel management, retail and PR management. Realising where her interest lay, she switched to working on mixers and consoles. Though she did it for the fun, she warns aspiring DJs that it’s not easy.

“It’s not a jazzy lifestyle of free drinks and friends that you think it is. You must be dedicated and keep practising. You need to experiment with all genres to evolve and find your style. People at clubs can be unpredictable but your job is to give them good music.”
