CHENNAI: Students from Vellore Institute of Technology-Chennai (VITC) have invented a new Formula-type car that they will be sending to Formula SAE, Australasia in December. The Team called Formula Electric VITC is the first Indian team to participate in this championship.
Formula SAE is an annual student racing championship in which cars fully designed, assembled and marketed by students contest against each other. “Our new car, Formula-type fully electric race car which will weigh just 250 kg and will have a top speed of 120 kmph,” said team manager Shivam Gaur. With the help of electric motor it will be able accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 3 seconds.
Unlike most Formula cars, this car is not run on gasoline or ethanol. The car is completely electric and is powered by lithium ion prismatic cells. After a full charge it can last three hours of continuous use. The car also has a wi-fi module which uploads its running parameters to a specific website in real time.
The Formula Electric VITC comprising 41 student-engineers won the national Formula Green Championship conducted by Indian Society of New Era Engineers (ISNEE) at Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore.
