CHENNAI: If the number of views of a trailer is an indication of how much a movie is expected, then the Tamil version of Deadpool is sure to interest a specific movie buffs among releases this Friday. Deadpool, the eighth instalment of the X-men series, revolves around cancer patient Wade Wilson, played by Ryan Reynolds, who chooses to participate in a government-funded programme to save himself. The treatment, apart from curing him, would help him get superhuman powers.
The idea of people possessing extraordinary powers has always interested people from Tamil Nadu, says an official from Fox Star Studios. “Deadpool, even though is a super-hero movie is not a conventional part of that genre. When we saw the movie we were not only impressed with the traditional action, but also the unconventional humour that the lead character possessed. We felt the humour could be localised to entertain those who understand regional languages,” said the source from Fox Star studios. “Since the movie had action and humour in equal share, we were eager to dub the movie in regional languages in India.”
And it’s not only Tamil audiences who would be meeting the mouthy anti-hero, but he is going to speaking even Telugu and Hindi. So how do the producers find voice experts tailor-made for the character? That’s where Mona Shetty, president, Sound and Vision, and Sashi Kumar, a language coordinator associated with Sound and Vision, comes in. Mona explained that it was challenge to maintain the rude and chirpy attitude of Deadpool. “We were careful not to hurt Indian sensibilities, but at the same time the arrogant attitude of the character was completely retained,” he says. “That cheeky-type humour is the main attraction of the character and we have tried everything to maintain that.”
Talking about the Tamil version of the movie, Sashi Kumar said that a sophisticated brand of Tamil was used while writing the script. “All of the jokes are completely relevant to people here. Moreover, no crass language or jokes were used. A series of brainstorming sessions with the writers was held to make sure we identified the right dialogues. We are hoping that this movie sets the benchmark for forthcoming dubbed movies,” Sashi said. Deadpool is releasing in Tamil this Friday.
