CHENNAI: Stirring a hornet’s nest, AICC spokesperson Khushbu’s reported comments favouring the enforcement of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has evoked sharp criticism from certain political parties and Muslim organisations, prompting even the State leadership to distance itself from what it claimed was her personal view.

In an interview with a channel aired on Sunday, the actress-turned-politician favoured the UCC, pointing out that it could put an end to such practices as triple talaq which are part of ‘male-centric’ personal laws leaving women at the receiving end.

The reported comments have come at a time when the Congress is in the forefront of opposing the Centre’s move to bring in the UCC aimed at ensuring gender equality by putting an end to discrimiantion of women in the Muslim personal law.

A day after Khushbu made the comments, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president S Thirunavukkarasar described them as her personal views and asserted that party would continue to oppose the move to push the UCC.

Thirunavukkarasar made it clear that the Congress would oppose the UCC tooth and nail as it goes against Shariat and other Islamic Acts.

As a section of the partymen found it to be a convenient handle against Khushbu, she denied it saying one could understand the meaning of what she said only if the TV show was viewed in its entirety. She also denied having favoured UCC.

“My lines are very much within the parameters of the  Congress party’s stand on Uniform Civil Code,” she told Express, adding that she had not spoken in favour of the code. Yet, she insisted that Muslim personal laws must be subjected to reform by initiating a discourse with the stake holders.
