CHENNAI: Two persons were arrested by the New Washermanpet police late on Friday night on the charge of attempting to distribute  lamps to lure voters in the RK Nagar Assembly constituency which is going to the polls on April 12.

The police also arrested a person for allegedly bribing voters in the Assembly segment.

According to police, the two, S Sivakumar (38), and P Prasanna (27), claimed themselves to be supporters of AIADMK (Amma) faction that has fielded TTV Dhinakaran as its candidate.

Police said they frisked the duo who were going on a motorcycle around midnight and found six traditional lamps (kuthuvilakku) kept hidden in the bike. The police conducted the check based on instructions of the Election Commission (EC) flying squad.

EC is said to have received a tip-off that Sivakumar and Prasanna were allegedly involved in distributing the lamps to lure voters in the constituency. The police have registered a case under section 171B IPC and enquiries are on.
