Expressions through fine grains of sand

CHENNAI: It is said that dreams are made of sand and sun. Sarvam Patel is one such dreamer whose skill with sand is evident in the way he turned it to art. CE talks to the master sculptor about his inspiration, passion and what brought him to Chennai.

After completing BCA and MBA, Sarvam did a course in animation. “I was actually in a journey to find out what I really want. I later realised that none of the above was for me,” recalls Sarvam about his early life crisis. “I saw a YouTube video about sand animation and that’s how I was driven towards learning it. I used to sketch and paint when I was a kid.”

Sarvam started sand art about six years ago. He is also a speed painter and a sand sculptor. “I do sculpturing once in awhile. But, I like sand animation and speed painting more because it is far more expressive,” he says. “I had to face a lot of objections from my family since they were concerned about how this art was going to provide a livelihood. But I proved them wrong and here I am,” he adds.

Sarvam has an impressive track record. His talent even took him across the globe a couple of times. He has also worked for big banner movies like Dangal and Baahubali for promotional purposes. Sarvam is performing in Phoenix MarketCity till today as a part of the Independence Day celebrations.

“I keep coming back to Chennai because the people here are awesome. They are appreciative of talent,” explains Sarvam.

Sarvam is a self-taught artist; he couldn’t seek training from any other artist because it was hard to find one at that time. This inspired him to start an academy for sand arts in his village. “I had to work hard — It took rigorous practice to master this art. That is why I started a school back in Balasinor, Ahmedabad. Right now I have over 500 students in my academy,” he smiles.

He believes his faith in god helped him survive all the obstacles and overcome his struggle. “If you have talent, you have it strive to get better at it. I am not doing this for money but for the love of art,” he adds.

Sarvam Patel is performing today at Phoenix MarketCity.
