CHENNAI: The owner of Aasife Biriyani chain of hotels, Aasife Ahmed Choudhary, was arrested for having allegedly cheated a financier of over Rs 5 crore, at Allikulam near Thoothukudi on Saturday, said a police release.

According to a complaint lodged by Kothandaraman (52), a resident of Kodambakkam and owner of a financial firm, he had lent Rs 5.70 crore to Nandini, second wife of Aasife, for business expansion in 2014.
For the last three years, Choudhary’s wife hasn’t repaid the debt and on Kothandraman’s insistence, Choudhary issued him some cheques and Rs 2 crore worth demand drafts.

As Kothandraman found the cheques and demand drafts fake,  he lodged the complaint with the city Police Commissioner on August 12 this year.

Subsequently, a case was registered by the Central Crime Branch. During investigation, it was found that Choudhary and Nandini had allegedly attempted to murder Kothandaraman through hirelings and a case was registered in this connection in the Kodambakkam police station on January 5.

Against the background, Chodhary, who has been absconding, was arrested by the CCB sleuths.
