Tough data section tests CAT aspirants

CHENNAI: In the Common Admission Test (CAT) held on Sunday, conducted by IIM Lucknow, an analysis by CAT coaching centres and students showed that Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) was the toughest of all sections for Slot 1 and the same level of difficulty was there for Slot 2.
The paper had three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability. Over 2.3 lakh students sat for the test across the country.

According to coaching centres like TIME and Career Launcher, Data Interpretation (DI) and Logical Reasoning (LR) comprised difficult and very difficult questions. In the entire section, it was difficult to distinguish between DI and LR. In some cases, though DI looked easier, it was actually tough while doing it.

Reading Comprehension and Quantitative Ability was easier than DI and LR. A relatively high proportion of questions from this area were inference-based, requiring good critical reasoning skills, the coaching centres said.

Sai Praneeth, a student of Electrical Engineering of IIT-Madras, who took the test said logical reasoning was the toughest. Eight passages were there and each one consisted of four questions. “In our centre, a majority attended half of the section. From DI, there were only two questions,” he said.

Pointing out Maths and English, he said he found Maths very easy but English was not so easy. “English wasn’t that difficult as expected. There were 24 questions on comprehension and the remaining 10 were on paragraph jumbles, finding the odd one out and marking correct summary,” he said.

Students posted their reactions about the paper on Twitter where a majority said they found DI and LR toughest. A student tweeted saying, “Dear CAT, please feel pity on DILR.” The second slot was equally tough like the first slot. However, DILR was tougher in the first slot, said the coaching centres.
