Delhi cops bring TTV Dhinakaran to Chennai to probe money trail

Co-accused Mallikarjuna too taken on same flight from Delhi to investigate how the alleged bribe was routed.

CHENNAI: A visibly stoic TTV Dhinakaran arrived in Chennai on Thursday, escorted by a team of Delhi police officers who are investigating the alleged bribery charges against him.

Mallikarjuna, who police said was Dhinakaran’s close aide and a co-accused, was also taken to Chennai on the same flight.

Police sources said Dhinakaran was taken to Chennai to investigate the alleged money trail on how he routed the bribe to the Election Commission officials through the conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar.

Dhinakaran was arrested by the Delhi police based on the statements of Sukesh. It was alleged that Dhinakaran was trying to bribe the Election Commission officials to get a verdict favourable to his faction of the AIADMK in the ‘Two Leaves’ symbol case.

Dhinakaran was first questioned at Rajaji Bhavan for over two hours from 2 pm to around 4.30 pm. He was then taken to his Karpagam Gardens residence in Adyar. This was the time that the generally calm and composed deputy general secretary of the AIADMK (Amma) faction turned a little emotional.

Sources said Dhinakaran was again intensely interrogated by the Delhi police officers in his house. Mallikarjuna too was brought to Dhinakaran’s residence for questioning and subsequently he was taken to his house at Shanti Colony in the city and questioned further.

While some party workers waited outside Dhinakaran’s house for their leader, Nanjil Sampath was among the few senior politicians who gave a statement to the media.

“TTV Dhinakaran is the future leader of Tamil Nadu,” Sampath said. “These are all attempts to frame him. We (party workers) are all with him and will go to any length to save him. We will wholeheartedly help the investigation,” he added.
