Speeding: Cops catch 17 riders, seize motorcycles

A senior police officer said FIRs have been registered against the 17 who were arrested. Most of the bikes seized were in the category of 150cc and above and would be produced before the court.

CHENNAI: Continuing its drive against overspeeding by vehicles, Chennai police special teams seized 17 motorcycles and arrested the riders for speeding along 100 Feet Road and Ennore Expressway in the wee hours of Sunday.

A senior police officer said FIRs have been registered against the 17 who were arrested. Most of the bikes seized were in the category of 150cc and above and would be produced before the court.

To curb snatchings, police had been instructed to intensify patrolling especially at night. They were working in two shifts -10 pm to 4 am and 4 am to 8 am. Based on a tip-off, police found the men speeding on both the stretches and intercepted them,” a police officer said.

In December 2017, around 100 such motorbikes were seized and FIRs were filed against 80 persons who were over-speeding along Santhome High road and nearby areas.

Also, police detained at least 20 youngsters and their motorbikes for the act after one of the vehicles injured an assistant commissioner of police on Sardar Patel Road.

During the ‘Storming Operation’ that was initiated to control crimes in the city, 146 men were detained on Saturday. While 52 were detained under suspicion, 49 were detained on charges of drunken driving and 39 for abetment. There was one against whom a non-bailable warrant had been issued. There were five history-sheeters.
