CHENNAI: Opposing the proposed Chennai - Salem Express highway project, Tamil Nadu State Sand Lorry Owners Federation (TNSSLF) president S Yuvaraj on Friday demanded widening of the existing roads which connect Chennai with Salem.

Talking to reporters here, he said widening of Tambaram - Tindivanam NH, Vanagaram - Walajah of Bengaluru Bypass and Madhavaram - Tada section of Chennai - Kolkata NH has been delayed by more than 10 years. “Had the road projects, which were approved a decade ago, been completed, thousands of litres of fuel would have been saved,” he said.

“Ulundurpet - Salem section has two lanes on most of the stretches. Similarly, Tirupattur - Salem road also has two lanes. If these roads are widened, accidents may come down,” he said and added that Sriperumpudur toll plaza has been collecting six lane toll fee for the past six years, even before widening the existing four lanes.
