Man sleeping at shopping complex in Pondy Bazaar run over by car

The victim identified as Venu of Teynampet was employed as a security guard at a building near the shopping complex.

CHENNAI: A 70-year-old man, who was sleeping at a shopping complex in Pondy Bazaar, was run over by a car coming out of the parking lot at around 9 pm on Thursday. The driver did not stop the vehicle and escaped from the spot after the incident, said the police.

The victim identified as Venu of Teynampet was employed as a security guard at a building near the shopping complex. Often Venu would consume alcohol and sleep inside nearby buildings, said the police.
On Thursday night, he went to sleep inside a shopping complex where the incident took place.

On hearing his screams, people rushed to the spot and took a grievously injured Venu to the Government Royapettah Hospital, where he succumbed. On information, Pondy Bazaar police registered and began an investigation. The police are analysing CCTV footage from the spot to identify the car.

Car hits theatre wall, 2 college students held
Chennai: Two college students were arrested after their car hit the compound wall of a theatre in Kilpauk on Sunday morning. They were driving under the influence of alcohol, said the police. Anna Square traffic police identified the duo as Mohammad Ali (18) of Mumbai and Arnav Chauhan (19) of Shimla, both first-year BSc students at a college in Kanathur. Mohammad Ali was driving the car along Poonamalle High Road at 4 am. When the vehicle was near the theatre, he lost control and hit the wall. They were returning from a party in ECR and were drunk, said the police. They sustained minor injuries in the incident, said the police. An investigation is on. ENS
