CHENNAI:  Doctors at Apollo Hospital performed a robotic head-and-neck surgery on a 49-year-old woman and removed an 8-cm tumour on the salivary gland without a visible scar on her neck.

This is an ideal treatment for young and socially-active people who need treatment for tumours of thyroid, parathyroid glands, parapharyngeal space tumours and others. The woman arrived with a large tumour visible on the right side of her neck, a release said.

The surgery was performed by Dr C Venkat Karthikeyan, clinical lead, robotic ENT-Head and neck, oncology. The robotic head-and-neck surgery is an evolving sub-speciality in the field of ENT which is classified as trans-oral robotic surgery for cancers of the throat and retro auricular hairline incision approach for tumours on the neck. This facilitates endoscopic neck surgeries under higher magnification and better cosmesis, the release added.
