CHENNAI: An unidentified woman allegedly kidnapped a 43-day-old boy from her mother at T Nagar on Thursday. The suspect got acquainted with the newborn’s mother claiming to be a government official and said she would help the family receive government grants and benefits for the child.

According to Kannagi Nagar police, a baby boy was born to Kumar and his wife Nishanthi of Kannagai Nagar over a month ago at Government Kasturbha Gandhi Hospital. On Thursday, a woman approached Nishanthi and got acquainted with her.

Claiming that she was involved in a scheme, through which she could provide the family financial grants and other benefits for the child, she convinced Nishanthi to visit a place in T Nagar where government staff were distributing free health drinks for newborn children.

The women went to T Nagar in an auto and had lunch at a restaurant. Nishanthi handed over her baby to the woman before leaving to wash her hands. However, when she returned, both were missing. The mother enquired with people at the restaurant but received no lead.

Along with her husband, she lodged a complaint with Kannagi Nagar police. Police combed CCTV footage from the areas to trace the suspect. The suspect was spotted walking around Kannagai Nagar over the past two days and asking people about newborn babies in the locality. Police said she was carrying a file and an ID card with her.
