CHENNAI: The Elephant Gate police arrested a police inspector and his accomplice for allegedly extorting over Rs 35 lakh from a businessman by threatening to implicate him in the 2024 Armstrong murder case. The accused, Inspector Mohamed Buhari and Srinivasan, were produced before the VIII Metropolitan Akhil Kumar maintained that he had no connection with the case and had sholitan Magistrate Court in George Town and remanded in judicial custody On Tuesday.
In his complaint, Akhil Kumar (35), a gold bullion and share market trader from Old Washermenpet, alleged that Buhari, attached to St Thomas Mount police station, had been extorting money from him for the past two years claiming that a mobile number linked to him had surfaced during the Armstrong murder investigation. Akhil Kumar maintained that he had no connection with the case and had shared the number with an acquaintance in 2018.
He further alleged that on August 2, Buhari visited his residence on the pretext of a drug-related inquiry, threatened to implicate him in a false case, and forced him to hand over `5 lakh to Srinivasan.
Based on the complaint, the Elephant Gate police registered a case, arrested the two officials, and launched a detailed investigation into the matter.
