CHENNAI: In view of the northeast monsoon, the city corporation has cleared sand and construction debris that had choked a stretch of the Buckingham Canal near the Kodungaiyur landfill. The action follows a TNIE report in July, ‘Debris chokes Buckingham Canal stretch near landfill in Chennai’, highlighting how the accumulated debris reduced the canal’s width by nearly three-fourths, raising concerns over flooding in north Chennai.

The following day, GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran inspected the spot and debris was removed from the stretch. Water flow along the canal is better, say residents. They expect these steps to reduce the flooding impact in Mullai Nagar, Sathya Moorthy Nagar, Udhaya Suriyan Nagar, Ezhil Nagar and JJR Nagar.
