CHENNAI: A 49-year-old government school teacher, who was returning home after census work, was robbed of her seven-sovereign gold thali chain after a man allegedly followed her and pushed her down the steps of a foot overbridge near Vandalur railway station on Saturday. The woman has sustained minor injuries, the police said.
According to Otteri police, Selvi of Mannivakkam works at a government school in Oonamancheri. Though Saturday was a holiday, she was deputed for census work at Oonamancheri. After completing the work, Selvi took a bus to Vandalur and, around 5.30 pm, began walking towards Mannivakkam along GST Road.
When she was descending the foot overbridge near Vandalur station, the suspect, who had allegedly been following her, pushed her down the steps and snatched the chain from her neck before fleeing across the tracks. In the attempt, the chain pendant — weighing two sovereigns — fell down and was later recovered, while the suspect fled with the remaining five sovereigns, police said.
Based on Selvi’s complaint, the Otteri police registered a case and are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspect and trace his escape route. “We are also checking footage from nearby roads and other locations to establish the suspect’s movements after the robbery,” a senior police officer said.
