Mitsubishi opens Rs 2,100-crore manufacturing unit in Tiruvallur

CHENNAI: Providing further fillip to the state’s industrial development, Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday inaugurated a manufacturing plant for air conditioners and compressors, established by Mitsubishi Electric India Private Limited, at Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district.

The facility, set up with an investment of Rs 2,091 crore and which has the potential to generate 2,104 direct and indirect jobs, was inaugurated by the chief minister through video conference from the state secretariat.

This is Mitsubishi Electric’s first manufacturing plant in India for room air conditioners and the firm’s first facility to produce outdoor units, indoor units, and compressors at a single location. So far, the company has invested Rs 1,633 crore in this project and has employed 629 people, including more than 200 women, an official release said.

‘Mitsubishi plant example of projects turning into reality’

Two memoranda of understanding for this facility were signed in May 2023 and January 2024. The CM had laid the foundation for the facility in September 2023. The release said the inauguration on Friday stands as a strong example of the state government’s sustained efforts to translate the announced projects into operational reality. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, headquartered in Japan, possesses expertise in the manufacture of energy and electric systems, industrial automation, information and communication systems, home appliances, and electrical and electronic equipment. Mitsubishi Electric India Private Limited is a subsidiary of this corporation.

Ministers T R B Rajaa and S M Nasar, Masafumi Ando, Group President, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation; Toshimitsu Ito, Chief Representative, Asia Pacific Region, Mitsubishi Electric Asia Private Limited; Atsushi Takase, Managing Director, Mitsubishi Electric India; Toru Iwakami, General Manager, Shizuoka Works, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation; Toru Onoda, Director and Business Head, Living Environment Division, Mitsubishi Electric India; Muneo Takahashi, Consul General of Japan, were among those present at the event.
