NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted regular bail to Olympic medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar in connection with the murder case of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar.
Kumar and others were accused of allegedly fatally assaulting Dhankar and his friends in May 2021 over an alleged property dispute.
Justice Sanjeev Narula allowed Kumar’s bail plea, directing him to furnish a bond of Rs 50,000 along with two sureties of the same amount.
Previously, Kumar had been granted interim bail for a week in July 2023 to undergo knee surgery. He, along with other accused individuals, is currently facing trial for his alleged involvement in the fatal assault on Dhankar at Chhatrasal Stadium.
Represented by advocates R S Malik and Sumeet Shokeen, Kumar’s legal team argued that he has been behind bars for over three and a half years. They pointed out that despite the passage of time, only 30 out of 222 prosecution witnesses have been examined. (All the material witnesses have already been examined,” they said.
