HYDERABAD: The cramped Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) might soon find some breathing space with additional platforms, which will come as a major relief for passengers.

A proposal by the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) to expand JBS is underway.

APSRTC officials told Expresso that proposals were sent to the APSRTC board for the construction of eight new platforms.

Presently, there are 18 platforms at the bus station, which are completely jammed as they accommodate all incoming buses.

The decision for expansion was taken after APSRTC Chairman M Satyanarayana Rao suggested adding more platforms on the rear side of the bus depot nearly two months ago.

Besides, the existing building where there are passenger amenities, will be strengthened further by spending Rs 20 lakh on repairs and other construction works. “We have sent the proposal to the corporation with all the required plans.

The funding for the project will be done by APSRTC,” Narayanaswamy, APSRTC Executive Director said.

A three-acre piece of land owned by APSRTC near the JBS, has allegedly been occupied by some slum-dwellers. Earlier, RTC officials had planned to develop the bus depot by taking up construction after vacating the slum-dwellers.

But the plan went into cold storage when some political leaders used pressure tactics.

It is learnt that the officials are doing little to retrieve the land, as they say they are helpless. “Had this land been available, we could have taken up expansion works in a major way,” officials said.

Thousands of passengers heading for Karimnagar, Adilabad, Medak and Nizamabad districts come to the JBS everyday.

Many students of professional colleges in Ibrahimpatnam and Hayatnagar use this terminal extensively.

Owing to lack of platform space, buses are forced to park at places other than the existing platforms, which inconveniences passengers. Officials said that there is still a need for improving parking facilities inside JBS. The issue of security still remains unaddressed both at JBS and Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS). The few CCTVs installed at various locations of bus stations remain dysfunctional.

A few months ago, tenders were floated for installation of sophisticated CCTVs at various locations inside the MGBS. But the project never took off.
