HYDERABAD: The V. Krishnamurthy Award for Excellence-2009 instituted by the Centre for Organization Development (COD) was conferred on Padma Bhushan S S Badrinath, Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Shankar Netralaya, Chennai.

The award was presented by eminent Oncologist Padmashri Suresh H Advani, Director, Medical Oncology, Jaslok Hospital & Research Center and Asian Institute of Oncology, SL Raheja Hospital, Mumbai at a function held here today.

Badrinath was conferred this award in recognition of his vision of creating an institution of national and international repute like Shankar Netralaya and for being a role model for those who aspire to travel on the path of excellence.

Accepting the award, Badrinath said Shankar Netralaya is a nonprofit organisation.

The hospital has one patent and one product which has been comercialised.

The ongoing research at the institute will make India proud in the years to come. “We conduct a third of our surgeries free of cost and the others pay a modest affordable fee towards our services,’’ he said.

The institution also started a unique Mobile Spectacle Dispensable vehicle to service the poor at their door step.

“Badrinath is a leading light of the nation for his dedication and vision. If there are a lakh people like Badrinath the map of this nation would have been different,’’ Suresh Advani said.

“Badrinath is an epitome of dedication to service, research and teaching. We need to transform our society to to provide affordable, quality care at the door step by starting hospitals in rural areas,’’ Advani said.

Earlier, the statue of former COD Chairman, BL Maheshwari was unveiled.
