HYDERABAD: Cracking the mystery behind seven murders which took place in the last six years, the Cyberabad police on Tuesday arrested a 40-yearold serial killer who has murdered seven women since 2003. The motive behind the murders: He hated women.

The Special Operation Team (SOT) of Cyberabad police on Tuesday arrested the misogynist — Maina Ramulu — a stone-cutter and a native of Medak district.

His modus operandi was to lure women and take them to a nearby toddy compound. Once the women were inebriated, he would strangle them using their saree and leave with whatever valuables they wore.

Disclosing the details at a press conference on Tuesday, Cyberabad commissioner S Prabhakar Reddy said that Ramulu developed a hatred towards women after his wife eloped just a few days into marriage. “Ramulu was involved in several other offences but never left behind a clue,” Prabhakar Reddy said.

Apart from the seven murders, the accused is involved in a murder case at Raidurgam, stealing of scrap material at Medchal and illegal selling of detonators at Bhongir.

Police recovered a pair of silver anklets, a pair of silver circlets, four silver rings, a pair of ear studs, two motorcycles and a Nokia phone from Ramulu.

Though he has been on a killing spree since 2003, the police have never been able to nail him. Ramulu’s latest victim was an unidentified woman aged between 30 and 35. He killed her in September in Narsingi. However, Ramulu said did not kill the women ‘intentionally’. “I committed the crime unknowingly, since I was intoxicated,” Ramulu claimed.

The accused was nabbed at Raiduragam toddy compound, where he committed most of the offences.

A resident of Arutla village in Patancheru, police said he killed three of the victims in Medak district while the remaining four were done to death in Cyberabad. In some of the offences, he killed the women in the toddy compound itself once everyone left. In other cases, he took them to secluded places and killed them.

“Similar to this case was the arrest of S Anjaiah a few years ago. He brutally killed 13 women as he hated the fairer sex,” Prabhakar Reddy said.

Cyberabad police arrest stone-cutter Ramulu for murdering seven women. He began killing women after his wife deserted him.

He would get his victims drunk at toddy compounds and strangle them.
