HYDERABAD: At the age of 10, DJ Charles Schillings was inspired by the musical show Jackson Five starring the five Jackson brothers. Gradually his passion for music turned into a full time career. Today, he is one of the most sought after DJs world over. Charles Schillings, who was recently in the city to perform at Ahala, Taj Krishna, says that he imbibed the habit of appreciating good music from his parents. His African origins and Belgian culture helped him to absorb from all genres. “I have seen my parents dance to Michael Jackson and listen to reggae other genres. My love for music and DJing started as a hobby when I played at school and small parties,” says the DJ recounting his earlier days.

Talking about his style, he claims to be open minded about all genres of music. “I try to pick something from wherever I go and incorporate into my music. Be it African percussion, electronic, house, my music is eclectic with light melodies, rhythm and groove. Also it is important to play music based on the reaction of the crowd,” he says.

Schillings, who has played in New York, Paris, Belgium and Tokoyo, feels that pleasing the crowd and make them dance to his tunes is the most important job of a DJ. “Sometimes I made good music which I really liked but sometimes the crowd was not in sync with the music. So establishing the connection is the crowd is essential. It is most 60 percent of what the crowd loves and 40 of what I like,” he explains.

The DJ, was finds inspiration in the music of the 70s and early eighties and is a fan of Depeche Mode and Shriekback, feels that he can play anywhere as long it is a good party. “It is the event and the club that makes the magic happen. I can play in a not so happening place but the club has to be good. It is challenge to meet new people and entertain them, he says adding that Maldives is one of his favourite places to DJ.

Schillings, who likes sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar’s music, was in India six years ago. However it is during this tour that he has gotten a chance to play. “Harmony, energy and melody is what I search in good music. I intend to share a great moment and leave my music behind for the people of this country,” were the DJ’s parting words.
