I walked on water. Well to be quite honest, Amelie, who I‘d convinced to come along with me, walked on water. Being the non-athletic writer that I am, I most just flopped around, trying to walk on water. Amelie, on the other hand, was doing a pretty good imitation of a giant hamster in a plastic ball. So I let go of whatever dignity I had left as I flopped around in my own personal bubble, which, incidentally, is called a Zorbing ball, and began to enjoy myself.
I never did manage to get all the way upright, but boy did I have fun trying! So what‘s Zorbing? The wikipedia definition goes as thus: “Zorbing (globe-riding, sphereing, orbing) is the recreation of rolling downhill in an orb, generally made of transparent plastic.” What we were doing was one step up from ordinary Zorbing. We were Aqua Zorbing or Water Zorbing - which is basically Zorbing in a small pool of water. The equipment is a bit different, but the concept is the same. For one, the Zorbing ball that is used for Aqua Zorbing has to be airtight, and made so after the Zorber gets inside. I had to crawl into what looked like a giant deflated beachball, only transparent, and wait for the Zorbing attendant at the park to fill it up with air. Once the plastic of the Zorbing ball was taut with air, the attendant gave it a push, I promptly fell over, and Wheeeee! I was on my way. Good thing the plastic was soft, otherwise falling down would have hurt a lot more! I spent about a half hour trying to stand up, unsuccessfully. After which I just lay down inside the ball, enjoying the quiet and chill of the water.
On the adventure scale, Aqua Zorbing doesn‘t score all that high. After all, there is no danger involved - even a child would be safe, and you don‘t even get wet! But on the fun scale, this sport gets all five stars. Doesn‘t matter if you‘re any good or not, you‘ll still have a ton of fun bouncing around in a bubble on water!
