A sculpture, by the virtue of its physical presence, converses intimately with the viewer and relates to him instantly as it exists in front of him, sharing a common time and space. A sculpture also gives the viewer a chance to explore more than one perspective as it can be viewed and contemplated upon from multiple angles and distances.
The ongoing show of sculptures at Kalakriti art gallery titled, The Medium and the Message, showcases artwork by sculptor Y Shiva Rama Chary. The artist has excelled not only in working in various mediums but has also been able to create sculptures of equal finesse and content regardless of the nature of the medium used by him.
Wood, fiberglass, bronze, copper and gold — these are a few of the media used by the artist. Some of the recent works have been done in stainless steel, a medium rarely used in sculpture, but the artist has amalgamated it in his work with an apt aesthetic sense and finish. A sculpture done in stainless steel titled, Unique Form, with a head on top and spiral bands along with a twisted rod with beads makes for an interesting composition.
The artist, in his works, binds together the ingredients of the physical and the metaphysical aspects with a fluency that cannot be missed.
The distortions of the figures and their culmination with the natural elements are such that a new soul is formed.
There are a few sculptures which have been titled, Journey, which exemplify the very essence of human life and existence. The artist here succeeds in making a dialogue which transcends beyond the physical limits as it swiftly enters the domain of the eternal.
