As many as 85 out of 221 junctions in greater Hyderabad limits which were to be provided with the latest automatic traffic control (ATC) based centrally monitored traffic signalling system under the Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System (H-TRIMS) will have to wait, in view of the ongoing Hyderabad metro rail works.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided that the HTRIMS projects at the 85 junctions would be taken up only after all the pillars are laid in the three corridors of the metro rail project.
GHMC officials told Express that the junction plans at these 85 areas can be modified only after completing the construction of pillars.
The decision will be taken based on the number of pillars constructed.
‘’If we implement the project right now, than it would lead to problems, if pillars come in between the junctions, than we will be forced to redesign the junctions and install the traffic signals in separate places and that would result in the wastage of public money’’ GHMC officials added.
Even the HMR authorities have suggested that the HTRIMS project at 85 junctions should be taken up only after the completion of pillars on the corridor I (Miyapur- LB nagar), corridor II (Jubilee bus station- Falaknuma) and corridor-III (Nagole-Shilparamam) are completed.
The state government has already sanctioned Rs 66.5 crore for the HTRIMS project.
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) would take up the project meant for upgradation of the signals at 180 junctions and another 41 new junctions will be brought under the project.
The signalling system will also have features like full connectivity with central command system, virtual loop cameras for adaptive traffic control and automatic signal timing adjustment.
The GHMC and traffic police are making efforts to install 40 traffic signals at junction by March 1.
