For those who enjoy traditional hand-crafted jewellery with a modern twist, the Spring Summer ’13 collection from Jewels of Sayuri is full of surprises. Expect viking knit, and jewellery fashioned from wire, fabric, papier mache and more under her two lines, Alambre (meaning wire in Spanish) and Rhapsody. “Each piece of jewellery is an expression of my brand,” says Divya N, whose Autumn/Winter ’12 Chitiram collection, based on Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings, was featured on TLC’s jewellery show, Oh My Gold.
Make a statement
With Alambre, the designer has manipulated “wire in every way possible.” Having worked with copper, aluminium and brass for three years, she brought several techniques to the fore. “I have done some wrapping, knitting (viking knit) crochet and created different shapes with wires. You will also find a lot of coloured wires like blue, fuchsia and green,” she offers. Meanwhile, Rhapsody, her coloured leather jewellery, is based on celebration. “It combines different elements from seasons,” she shares. “For instance, in the Mango Leaf necklace, the leaf (symbolic at every Tamil occasion) is carved out of leather and strung into blue beads. The latter, representing robin eggs from American culture, gives it a contemporary touch,” she shares. Apart from this, she has a regular line comprising papier mache, fabric and beaded jewellery, which is updated every two weeks.
Silver streak
Those who are into experimental jewellery will want to take home her Scrabble tile line, introduced in January. There are earrings, bracelets and pendants made from these tiles. The designer has clients from across the globe, and runs a blog, which “is well read in the US and UK.” Her bridal series and DIY (Do It Yourself) posts are “quite popular.” The NIFT Chennai alumnus, who runs her business via Facebook, also conducts classes and workshops on jewellery making. Currently busy with her Autumn Winter collection, she reveals, “I will have fine silver and theme-based lines. I am working with patina and will be using alcohol inks on metals like brass and silver.”
Priced from Rs150 to Rs 2,000.
