For having a comprehensive public transportation in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Area (HMA) by 2041, the Hyderabad city requires a whopping Rs 1,46,360 crore, ie, an average Rs 5,000 crore per annum, in the next 30 years to plug the present deficiencies and to meet future demands.
HMA’s consultants, LEA Associates South Asia Pvt Ltd and LEA International Ltd, took up a Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) on long-term transport strategy till 2041 and prepared the estimates of Rs 1.46 lakh crore.
HMDA officials told Express that considering the population projection, employment forecast, land-use scenarios, network scenarios and vehicle growth scenarios, the consultants suggested a desirable transport systems such as a metro rail network of 235 km, bus rapid transit system (BRTS) network of 115 km, multi-modal transportation system (MMTS) network of 150 km (phases I and II) and an hierarchical road network of 6,500 km in the HMA limits.
The consultants have developed the urban transport model for land use transport network analysis and have made an assessment of transport infrastructure required.
The CTS for the HMA was taken up with central government’s assistance (50 pc) and the remaining is shared by the stake holders consisting of HMDA, GHMC, APSRTC and Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited.
Of the eight activities proposed in the CTS, the consultants have completed five which include project inception, development of immediate action plan (IAP), establishment of baseline data through field surveys, development of urban transport planning models and envisioning scenario and developing the long-term transport strategy.
