The state capital, which has become the most-preferred destination for international events, is going to host yet another prestigious event _ the sixth edition of Commonwealth Youth Parliamentarians’ Convention, known as the Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP) — for five days from October 21.

According to Assembly speaker Nadendla Manohar, about 250 parliamentarians from  54 countries will take part in the convention which will discuss how to increase the role of youngsters in the law-making bodies.

Of the 250 delegates, as many as 108 will be aged below 29 years who will share their political experiences with other members on transforming legislatures into a flaw-less law-making bodies.

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) president Alan Haselhurst is also expected to take part in the convention which is likely to be inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee. Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar and speakers of various state Assemblies are also expected to participate in the conclave.

The main objective of the convention is to give young parliamentarians of Commonwealth countries an insight into law-making bodies of various counties, Manohar said. The meeting will focus mainly on discussing  poverty, unemployment and such other issues which have become a bugbear for the third world countries.

Budget perusal

The speaker said the newly-formed standing committees of the Assembly completed  reviewing the allocations made in the budget for various departments for the current financial year.

“The reports of these committees are under preparation and will be tabled in both Houses as soon as they meet for the second spell of the budget session,” he said.

Shankar Rao plea

Manohar has recorded the explanation of the police officials on a petition filed by  Secunderabad Cantonment MLA P Shankar Rao urging him to look into the police excesses committed against him during his arrest in connection with the Greenfield lands case. Cyberabad police commissioner CV Anand, his predecessor Dwaraka Tirumala Rao and some other police officials attended the speaker’s review meeting.
